Chapter 10
We left Telegraph avenue, marching along Dwight with the college campus to our right. "We are not allowed to go through there," advised Beck as we went along, "Most of the tanks were destroyed a few weeks ago, but we don't want to risk another one lurking around."
"What's a tank?" asked Tom with a cocked brow, "Like a real tank, a panzer or something?"
Beck shrugged his shoulders, "Not quite like that. Take the upper torso of a weight lifter and glue it onto a tank the size of a compact car, and you got a tank. They got a canon and some automated guns. Nasty stuff. They don't talk, they just shoot until you stop moving, then a few more times to be sure."
I laughed nervously, "I'm glad I wasn't sent to try and reason with those. That would be a real challenge."
Tom reached over and ribbed me lightly, "Now that you've said that, they'll send us there next. You've cursed us all."
I stuck out my tongue at him and pointed ahead, "So, it's about 7 blocks or so? Are you going to tell us the whole plan now?"
Tom nodded, "Go ahead and take the vial, we should get this set up before we wander into their territory, or they might get wise."
"Wise?" scoffed Beck, "That would be the day. Still, they aren't entirely mindless."
I dug out that vial, carefully labeled 'house mouse', and popped the top off, "Bottom's up!" I said, more to bolster my own confidence than in any levity I was feeling at the moment. Nanites always felt weird when you swallowed them. Like sand, but finer, scratching a little as they went down.
My insides exploded in a sudden warmth. Alpha nanites hit like a train, but it was a train of delights. I wobbled and sank to my knees as my body's DNA was abruptly put in a choke hold and bent into new and interesting shapes. My equine snout narrowed into a more rodent configuration, and my fur became a soft white. Behind me, brush tail lengthened out to a long furry tail of a mouse. Ears widened and feet became more dainty. I lost a lot of that muscle mass of the zebra people, and took on the much more meek form of the house mouse.
Still panting, I offered no resistance as Tom began to tie my hands, drawing them together and looping the thin rope around. He didn't seem to be too worried about me actually getting away. "All part of the show?" I asked, starting to come around. Just to test, I wriggled my wrists about. Tight enough to look the part, but I was fairly sure I could get free if I tried hard enough.
"Exactly so," said Tom, with that feline grin of his, "You're our prisoner and our barter. We're going to sell you to the Hotdoggers and they'll probably piss themselves at the chance for it. If they come at us in a rush, we attack back. If they're willing to trade, we'll lead them to a better place for the ambush.
